How Biofeedback Works for Mind Ailments

Instead of directly diagnosing a disease like a traditional medical scan, biofeedback acts as a "physiological mirror," translating stress and emotional responses into visible metrics on a screen. 

  • Heart Rate Variability (HRV): Measures how your heart responds to stress. Low variability often indicates a "fight or flight" response, heavily linked to chronic anxiety or panic disorders. 

  • Neurofeedback (EEG): Measures brainwave activity. Clinicians use this to track dysregulated patterns—such as those associated with ADHD, trauma, or insomnia—and teach you how to normalize them.

  • Electromyography (EMG): Monitors muscle tension. It is often used to diagnose and alleviate the physical manifestations of stress, like tension headaches or jaw clenching.

  • Galvanic Skin Response (GSR): Measures sweat gland activity. Sudden spikes can identify specific mental or emotional triggers related to nervousness and phobias. 

 

Common Psychiatric and Mental Applications

Research shows that biofeedback can be an effective adjunctive (complementary) treatment alongside traditional therapies for several conditions: 

  • Anxiety and Panic Disorders: Provides real-time "radar" of the autonomic nervous system to improve cognitive-behavioral coping strategies.

  • ADHD: Neurofeedback helps train the brain to improve concentration and decrease hyperactivity.

  • Trauma/PTSD: Helps individuals regulate hyperarousal by bringing bodily processes back under conscious control.

  • Insomnia: Trains the body to enter deeper states of relaxation for better sleep.
